The warm and welcoming “safe space café” event brought together families of immigrant background in Vaasa, creating an atmosphere of connection, trust, and shared experience.
Safe Corner hosted the event on the 20th of April, in collaboration with the Evangelical Lutheran Parish in Palosaari, Vaasa. Safe Corner is a local charity non-profit organization known for organizing inclusive, low-threshold activities that support families and community wellbeing. Their multicultural safe-space café was designed to offer a relaxed and accessible environment where parents and children can meet others, enjoy refreshments, and build social networks.
Held at the Evangelical Lutheran Parish hall in Palosaari, the gathering welcomed families from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The venue itself made it easy for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in the program and feel a sense of belonging.
Throughout the evening, the café lived up to its purpose as a safe and inclusive space. Children played together freely, forming new friendships across cultures, while parents engaged in conversations with volunteers and an expert over coffee and snacks. Volunteers and organizers ensured that everyone felt seen and included, regardless of language ability or length of time in Vaasa.
The event emphasized key values of safety, respect, and cultural exchange. For many attendees, especially those new to the country, such spaces were essential. They provided not only social interaction but also informal opportunities to practice language skills, share experiences, and gain a better understanding of life in Finland.
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Families expressed appreciation for the welcoming atmosphere and the chance to meet others in similar situations. Many highlighted how important it is to have regular, free, and accessible events where they can feel comfortable bringing their children and being themselves.
Overall, the safe space café event was a clear success, strengthening community ties, supporting integration, and reinforcing Vaasa’s role as a diverse and inclusive city where people from different backgrounds can come together and thrive.
